Raymond M. Paetzold

Raymond M. Paetzold has been practicing law since 1977. He graduated from Columbia University in New York and, while on active duty with the United States Coast Guard, obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Miami, graduating magna cum laude. His legal career in the Coast Guard included representation of the United States in maritime matters handled by the Department of Justice, Admiralty and Shipping, West Coast office. After leaving the service, Mr. Paetzold became associated with the maritime firms of Kenny & Finan; Finan, White & Morrison; and was a shareholder at Finan, White & Paetzold; Paetzold, White & Brodsky; and The Paetzold Law Firm. In 2006, he joined Emard Danoff Port Tamulski & Paetzold LLP as a partner. Mr. Paetzold specializes in litigation and dispute resolution in all facets of the marine transportation and pleasure boating industries, including personal injury, wrongful death, hull and cargo damage, pollution, stranding, salvage, towing, vessel repair and marine insurance, and in the related industries of dredging and seawall, pier, and marine construction. He has extensive experience in administrative hearings before state and federal agencies and is primary counsel to the State Board of Pilot Commissioners and to the California Maritime Academy Foundation. As an attorney in the Coast Guard, he gained broad-based experience interpreting, implementing and enforcing federal water pollution, port and marine safety, fishery management, and navigation laws. He also has extensive shiphandling experience, qualified as a marine inspector of ships from small passenger ferries to deep draft tankers, and served as Chief, Merchant Vessel Personnel in San Francisco. Mr. Paetzold is an "AV" rated attorney and a member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States, past chair of The Pacific Admiralty Seminar steering committee and currently serves as President the Marine Exchange of San Francisco. He also serves as a neutral early evaluator and mediator for the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California and for private parties.
