Eric Danoff
Eric Danoff has been practicing law since 1974. He graduated from Dartmouth College summa cum laude and obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California (Boalt Hall) at Berkeley. His legal career began at Graham & James, where he became a partner and the head of that firm's maritime department. He later joined Kaye, Rose & Partners, LLP, until forming Emard, Danoff, Port & Tamulski, LLP. He has experience in a wide variety of maritime, transportation, and international litigation cases, including trial experience (jury and non-jury) in federal and state courts. His practice has focused on the maritime and transportation industries. Vessel interests frequently have called upon him to defend against personal injury and wrongful death claims (by seamen, longshoremen, and passengers) and to defend against claims for cargo loss or damage. Among other litigation he has handled are maritime cases involving collisions, strandings, oil pollution incidents, fires aboard ship, product liability claims, and sexual and racial harassment and discrimination claims. Marine insurance issues have played a significant part in several of these matters. He has handled a number of charter party disputes, including arbitrations in San Francisco and New York. He has enforced (and defended against enforcement of) maritime liens and ship mortgages. His clients have included shipowners, charterers, P&I clubs, marine insurers, and container lessors. In 1997 Mr. Danoff had the privilege of successfully arguing a landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court concerning the standards for determining an injured maritime worker's status as a seaman or LHWCA worker. He has written several articles on maritime related subjects, and he has lectured at the Pacific Admiralty Seminar, the International Maritime Law Seminar, and the LSU Maritime Personal Injury Seminar. He is an "AV" rated attorney who is a Proctor member of the Maritime Law Association, and he has been named in Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Shipping and Maritime Lawyers. In 1998 Mr. Danoff testified before a U.S. Senate Subcommittee concerning proposed changes to the Death on the High Seas Act. He serves as an arbitrator and as a mediator for the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California. |
